Course Overview:
Welcome to the Engineering Department at the Bridgwater Campus! Our comprehensive engineering apprenticeship program is designed to provide aspiring individuals with a dynamic and hands-on learning experience, paving the way for a rewarding career in the world of engineering. This apprenticeship offers a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical skills, preparing you for the challenges and opportunities in the engineering industry.


Location: Based at the Engineering Department of the Bridgwater Campus, our state-of-the-art facilities provide the ideal environment for your learning journey. The campus is equipped with cutting-edge technology and resources, ensuring that you receive the highest quality education.

Admission Requirements: To enrol in our engineering apprenticeship, we recommend a minimum grade of 4/C in both English and Maths. If you do not hold these grades, you will be required to attend classrooms in the first year to work towards a Level 2 Functional skills qualification.


Engineering Standards: Choose your path within the engineering field from our diverse range of standards:


1.Engineering Fitter:
•Overview: Produce complex, high value, low volume components or assemblies in full or part, using machines, equipment, or systems to the required specification.
•BTEC Qualification Options: Electrical or Mechanical

2.Maintenance & Operations Engineering Technician:
•Overview: Work on various types of plant and equipment commonly found throughout the Engineering Industry sectors. You can expect to migrate through these sectors during the course of your career.
•BTEC Qualification Options: Electrical or Mechanical


3.Machining Technician:
•Overview: Produce complex and precision machined products that are typically used in machinery. You can also produce bespoke components or products for domestic appliances or medical equipment, using a variety of machines to carry out your work.


4.Plate Welder:
•Overview: Based at our Welding Centre of Excellence, manually weld plates and structural components to high standards. This will involve fabrication, construction, or repair of fabricated plate assemblies, extrusions, and structural components used often to fabricate larger components and assemblies


Program Structure: Our engineering apprenticeship program combines practical, hands-on experience with classroom learning. Most standards require one day of college attendance per week, allowing you to apply your knowledge in a real-world setting.

Assessment Methods

There are no exams. Your knowledge and skills are assessed on an on-going basis and you will have to demonstrate that you can meet the required standards throughout your training. There will however, be examinations for the additional qualifications, such as City & Guilds or BTEC Technical Certificates and Functional Skills (if required).

1. Engineering Fitter:

• BTEC Qualification Options: Electrical or Mechanical
• College Attendance: 1 day per week
• Duration: 42 months
2. Maintenance & Operations Engineering Technician:
• Overview: Work on various types of plant and equipment commonly found throughout the Engineering Industry sectors. You can expect to migrate through these sectors during the course of your career.
• BTEC Qualification Options: Electrical, Mechanical, or Electromechanical
• College Attendance: 1 day per week
• Duration: 36 months
3. Machining Technician:
• Overview: Produce complex and precision machined products that are typically used in machinery. You can also produce bespoke components or products for domestic appliances or medical equipment, using a variety of machines to carry out your work.
• College Attendance: 3 days per week (with reduction in year 2)
• Duration: 42 months
4. Plate Welder:
• Overview: Based at our Welding Centre of Excellence, manually weld plates and structural components to high standards. This will involve fabrication, construction, or repair of fabricated plate assemblies, extrusions, and structural components used often to fabricate larger components and assemblies
• College Attendance: 1 day per week
• Duration: 36 months
